2008 Match & Player details
Tignes Barbarians is a non affiliated, social rugby team based in the Alpine resort of.......Tignes surprisingly!
Formed in 1997 as a response to the local French team who wanted 'do the Brits', the team has had mixed fortunes playing their annual on snow game against the French resort workers.
Referees have varied over the years, Brit refs have always been straight down the line but as one would expect, the French refs have always been highly patriotic.
The initial game featured many of the local police in an attempt to stamp (literally) their authority over the Brits. As as result of the refusal of the Brit side to back down the French quickly dropped the tactic of using the local law enforcement and after a couple of years decided to actually play rugby.

The teams are picked from local resort workers, holiday makers and anyone who fancies a run out on the snow. Friends and associates from other resorts in the Alps also put in a showing every couple of seasons.

Several players make the trip out from the UK each year just to play this one game.
The game itself is played at an altitude of 2100m (almost 7000') with the pitch being marked out on the snow.
A vain attempt is made by the piste security to make the snow as compact as possible, but after only a few minutes this is quickly transformed into chopped slush.
Grip and traction therefore are somewhat difficult.
As a result the rules are slightly modified to prevent injury. e.g. no pushing in the scrums.
Although it is billed and played in the spirit of a friendly, there is always a rivalry between the two sides. As in all rugby games however, what happens in the game stays in the game and all convene for the '3rd Half' in the clubhouse.
Trophies for the day are awarded and a few shandies are shared and competed for.
